What I love

Flying: The first passion that I ever really think that I had. I love getting into airplanes and going to the airport. Every single time a plane goes overhead I look up. I don’t try to identify it like other pilots do, but I look up and I wish that I was up there. I worked extra hours to get my pilot’s license and I got it when I was really young. I feel this overpowering need to fly constantly. I love the subtly of the flying and the way it makes me think about what is going to happen next. I feel almost super-human when I apply the process of precognition that is so important to flying to other endeavors like lab work or learned processes. I love the feeling of accelerating down the runway and being pressed into your seat when you lift-off. I love sitting in an airplane and admiring the view around me. I love being high. I love the blue sky and the white fluffy clouds that I just want to dive into. I love the adventure and the slight tingling of danger every time you come in for a landing. I love the subtle movements of control that tell the airplane precisely where to go. I love the violent control movements to bring the airplane back from the brink of a dive. I love listening to the radios and feel powerful and important when I have to use them. I love flying with all my heart.

Science: I love learning about science. I love learning about all the detailed structures that go into making us human. I love learning about the billions of mechanisms that are carried out every second in our cells that produce the most amazing machine ever developed. I love talking about these structures with other people and learning of new things that are constantly taking place. I love the high-technology feeling. I love thinking about creative ways to use these amazing machines to benefit human-kind. I love accomplishing difficult tasks related to this field like standardized tests and learning and teaching very difficult concepts. I love teaching these concepts. I love helping people learn about molecular biology. I love designing presentations with lots of graphics and the challenge of figuring out the simplest way to explain things. I believe that science is mankind’s greatest hope for a good and healthy future. I love science

Outdoors: I love being outside. I love breathing fresh, cold air and feeling the sun on my face. I love standing in front of a giant snow field or on top of a mountain and just staring at the beautiful white face or the tall view. I love the challenge of hiking a tall mountain or scaling a rock face or skiing a small cliff / jump. I love being high on a rock face and looking down on a mountain lake. I love skiing though quiet woods and the feeling of freedom and solitude that it generates. I love hiking through the woods and mountains with your whole livelihood on your back. I love the taste of warm food at the campsite after a hard hike. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from climbing something difficult or going somewhere no-one has been. I love sunsets and sunrises. I love being the only human being for hundreds of miles. I love flashing through a meadow on a mountain bike. I love sweating and having the sweat being blown away by a fresh breeze or renewed movement. I love the clink of the outdoor warrior’s gear before a long siege. I love the sense of trust and friendship that develops between outdoorsy people. I love the unspoken competitiveness that underlies all these activities. I love the primitive feeling that is barely contained and protected by all the high-tech clothing and gear. I love being outside.

There are other things I love, but those are the main ones. Now how do I combine all that into a career? That is what has been troubling me for the last three years.

I'm back

Hey everybody (the whole three people who have read this blog)
I am back from my trip to Guatemala and I feel like a slightly different person. I met some really amazing people, I traveled to three different Central American countries, I learned a whole ton of Spanish, I learned how to SCUBA dive, and I learned a little about what I want to do with my life. You can read about my whole trip here if you are so inlcined (and for however long the blog lasts). I have decided to come public, a lot of my friends are now going to be reading this blog (yeah right), so I will have to moderate my political rantings a little, and try not to offend everyone. I will still be known as Flightfire, but some people will know who I am and feel free to use my real name in the comments section. I will be talking a lot about my career prospects from now on and trying to figure out what to do with my life. Hope everyone is doing well and maybe I can re-enter the blog world here soon.
